河北通过进一步的研究，得到了NVP在丙烯酸或kso存在下的水解机理。NVP分子中乙烯基的电荷不平衡，即双键连接的两个碳原子的电荷密度不同。这种电荷不平衡为NVP的水解提供了可能。当存在酸性或碱性离子时，NVP在分子中发生异构化，形成一系列过渡态，NVP水解的第二步是吡咯烷酮与NVP分子的加成反应，产物在水存在下进一步分解为吡咯烷酮和乙醛。
